The origami concept for the M Hotel in Chengdu is based on the architect’s rendering. Recurring features in the interior are three-dimensional geometric designs which are emphasised by energy-efficient LED lighting.
At the reception, dimmable downlights are aimed where the higher light levels (brightness) are required, for example, on the table tops. The colourful ceiling feature is made of irregular-shaped pentagons (umbrellas) — some sides are translucent tinted glass allowing the light to shine through, while other sides are metallic plates which act as mirrors to reflect light. The umbrellas are lit by downlights on the ceiling and donut rings of LED strips inside the umbrellas.
The spaces are illuminated by diffuse lights in the ceiling coves. Traditional Chinese art on the wall are revealed by the spread of light as small three-dimensional pixel cubes. Light in the grooves of the columns spills through to show the diamond cut-outs. Light can be seen between the gaps of the protruding four-sided tiles on the walls. Other parts of the wall feature lights inside little gold-finished boxes of irregular sizes.
